Stopp i kraftverket

After being battered and bruised by a preliminary thunderstorm last Monday, the migration trap was eventually overwhelmed by a second knock out blow on wedsnesday night when yet another thunderstorm tore across Karlstad.

Readings taken from Alsterskraftverk show that there was an increase of 40cm from the day before which stripped the trap down to 4 pieces and then dispersed them across the river.

If you look carefully you can actually see how the yellow water pipe has been stripped away and washed across the river. The silver collection tube was also screwed down to wood on the trap but this made no difference. Fortunately, all the various components that make up the trap could be salvaged, and after a re-think, the trap has now been slightly modified.

The photo below shows the impact of the flash flood.

New design for the collection trap is shown below:

The wooden guidance barriers are now horizontal, and contain small holes which have been drilled into the wood and then covered with netting to prevent any small fish passing through. The theory is that this will enable a more regular, and potentially higher volume/velocity of water to pass over the trap surface, therefore perhaps a higher temptation for eel elvers to commute up the trap. The top end of the trap is also far more secure with the new design, and thus any elvers which do move upwards, should almost certainly enter the collection tube down into the storage bin.

Latest figures for the traps that sit above the power station are also increasing. 56 fish caught in the last 6 days compared to 75 for the month of May. Quite a remarkable increase, largely due to high catches of mört, gös and small gädda.

Catches of eel however have fallen, however – there has been 4 in the last 2 days which could indicate there may be more to come…

After being sited in Alstersälven for 14 days, the migration trap is still awaiting its first catch. The only thing caught so far, is leeches! However, we should be patient, as perhaps the first catch is just around the corner. Who knows..

After heavy rainfall on Monday night, the water level in Alstersälven rose an incredible 30cm. The knock on effect of the forceful water, and wooden debris  have pounded the trap which is currently ‘riding out the storm’. Certainly not favourable conditions for trapping as you can see from the comparisons of figures 1 and 2.

Figure 1: Optimal and typical water level in the summer months in Alster.

Figure 2: Indicating the concerning increase in water volume and velocity around the trapping site.

Hopefully the water level will quickly subside to enable a realistic chance of catching some eel elvers!

What have we found!?

-75 fish total of which 35 were eels ( 3 not analysed for weight/length).

-Currently 8 other species including mört, braxen, abborre, benlöja, gös, lake, suttare och björkna.

-Biggest eel 1.64kg / 987mm on 22 May.

Total eel numbers with different trap treatment:

Ytan bara: –>2 stk ( +3stk non analysed)

Botten bara: –>11 stk

Ytan+botten:  Ytan –> 3stk
                     Botten –> 16stk

So for the month of May, we have a total of 27 eels in bottom trap and 5 in Ytan. The most likely scenario to catch eels when both top and bottom are open, and then the bottom trap is most productive.

However this statistic could easily change within a matter of days since the difference is so minimal!

I have also taken a couple of other pictures of the nature at Alsterälven. The first picture is of a newly emerged dragonfly, clinging onto some vegetation in preparation to dry its wings in the sun to enter adulthood.

Just above is a another sun basker – a snok which has settled just above my upstream migration trap!

After the first capture was recently recorded of young eels in the traps in Ätran, a trap has also been constructed and placed into Alsterälven to try and assess if there is any upstream migration of juvenille eel ‘elvers’. Traps have not been placed before to research for the upstream migration in Alster so it will be exciting to discover, if, there is infact any migration via Vänern to the river.

Image 3 indicates the movements of water, and hopeful movements of elvers over the trap. The blue line shows the direction of syphoned upstream water down over the ‘eel matting’ to re-create a natural flow of water. The red lines show the potential movement of elvers up the slope, through the piping and into the collection bin.

The pink lines show true artistic talent of ‘life-like’ elvers crawling up ready for the drop into the collection bin.

The first night revealed no hidden jewels so maybe it a waiting game like waiting for Santa to arrive..

Project Update!

After ten days we have been observing a steady stream of fish moving downstream, with species including ål, abborre, mört, braxen, lake, löja, och gös found in the traps. The current total of eels to date is 21 individuals, with the largest weighing 1.56kg and a length of 915mm.

The upstream migration trap I have been building is also nearly completed and will hopefully be sited in the river in the near future to assess the quantity of eels moving back up-river after a long  journey out to sea.

It was nice to see some interested young people from the gymnasiet on wednesday who may also take up an interest in conservation efforts in the future.

Flygande start
